What is Autophagy and Why is it Important?

Autophagy is the process by which the cells of our bodies get rid of the trash in our bodies.  Do you remember biology class when you had to diagram the parts of a cell and learned that there were parts which had the job of removing the trash from that cell?  In 2016, that process was given a name and explained by Nobel Prize winner Yoshinori Ohsumi.

So what does autophagy have to do with the keto diet? Well, for one thing, autophagy is the process that rids the body of toxins, and other things we have caused to live in our bodies because of the lousy American diet we all eat.  Because we have fed ourselves high sugar, carbohydrates, especially the bad ones, we have fed our cells and bodies poison.  We've fed the viruses we encounter on a daily basis.  Living on a keto diet, essentially removing those bad carbs, causes our cells to begin to work the way they were intended to work.  Our cells can finally take out the trash every day.  Next, autophagy is the process where the cells use energy that is stored in our bodies that comes from other unnecessary components such as the excess skin we carry around as we lose fat.  Autophagy helps prevent the saggy skin left over by losing weight.  It does this through a keto diet lifestyle, intermittent fasting, and of course, exercise.
